Some Must and Must-Not in Attorney Advertising

To be a great litigator, you must have the proper training, skills and experience required to properly represent your clients. But to be a successful lawyer, you need to be a smart businessman as well. One of the things you need to do as a “businessman” in law profession is to advertise the services you or your firm offers. After all, you can’t expect that your clients will always spread the word about your services; or if they do, you certainly cannot expect that to be enough. An effective attorney advertising is what you need if you want to promote your business.

Attorney advertising must abide by the rules and code of ethics. There are certain restrictions when it comes to advertising for lawyers and law firms. The restrictions include the prohibition of the use of some marketing devices such as the portrayal of judges, the use of actors or fictionalized characters, the use of a moniker or a nickname, posting testimonials or endorsements from former clients and advertisements or ad presentations that resemble legal documents.

There are also certain limits with regard to soliciting new clients for 30 days after a tort as well as on communicating with non-clients.
