The Role of the Analyst in the Proper Gathering of Business Requirements

The task of business requirements gathering and creating a clear picture of what needs to be done is a critical element of any project. The initiators of the project may have a clear view of the ultimate goal. However, they rarely understand the specific requirements of all the stake holders for the system that is being purchased or developed. Thus, it is commonly up to the business analyst to create a complete set of business requirements to enable better planning, shorter delivery cycles, more accurate cost estimates, and the adoption of the final outcome.

Business requirement gathering may sound so simple to anyone who does not really know how painstaking the task can be. The business analyst must first interview the sponsor of the project to gain a clear understanding of the goals and the business objectives of the project in order to gather all the business requirements in the correct context. The process must be done effectively. Otherwise, the whole project could end in total failure. For this reason, many business analysts attend business requirements training to learn more on how to successfully and accurately gather business requirements and how to write effective business requirements. Without such knowledge, the business analyst may find himself gathering business requirements that are considered out of scope. He may also end up promoting individual agendas instead of the organization’s visions.

The business analyst must also build a level of trust between him and the clients in order for the clients to provide an honest and open input.
